Starwood announced changes to Cash & Points

Today, Starwood announced changes to their popular cash & points redemption chart for hotel bookings made on or after March 5, 2013. They increased the cost for standard rooms almost cross the whole board, only category 7 hotels remained unchanged. Starwood also added the possibility to use cash and points for upgraded rooms and for suites.

This is what Starwood says about the changes:

  • Adding the ability to redeem for upgraded rooms such as suites, Club Rooms, Smart Rooms, and rooms with a view, where available.
  • Adding all Category 1 and 2 destinations worldwide.
  • Updating pricing for standard room redemption, with the intention of expanded availability.

If the increased prices lead to greater availability then it is not that really bad, since it is sometimes really tough to find cash & points rates for a specific property and a specific date. It is also nice that enhanced rooms and suites can be had as well.

The changes in detail are as follows:

  • Category 1
    Old Standad Room: 1,200 points + $25
    New Standard Room: 1,500 points + $30
    New Upgraded Room: 2,000 – 2,250 points + $50 – $60
    New Suites: 3,000 points + $75
  • Category 2
    Old Standad Room: 1,600 points + $30
    New Standard Room: 2,000 points + $35
    New Upgraded Room: 2,500 – 2,750 points + $55 – $65
    New Suites: 4,000 points + $95
  • Category 3
    Old Standad Room: 2,800 points + $45
    New Standard Room: 3,500 points + $55
    New Upgraded Room: 4,000 – 4,250 points + $75 – $85
    New Suites: 7,000 points + $125
  • Category 4
    Old Standad Room: 4,000 points + $60
    New Standard Room: 5,000 points + $75
    New Upgraded Room: 5,500 – 5,750 points + $95 – $105
    New Suites: 10,000 points + $175
  • Category 5
    Old Standad Room: 4,800 points + $90
    New Standard Room: 6,000 points + $110
    New Upgraded Room: 6,750 – 7,250 points + $135 – $150
    New Suites: 12,000 points + $275
  • Category 6
    Old Standad Room: 8,000 points + $150
    New Standard Room: 10,000 points + $180
    New Upgraded Room: 10,750 – 11,250 points + $210 – $230
    New Suites: 20,000 points + $450
  • Category 7
    Old Standad Room: 15,000 points + $275
    New Standard Room: 15,000 points + $275
    New Upgraded Room: 15,750 – 16,250 points + $290 – $315
    New Suites: 30,000 points + $625

The points part will increase 25% for categories 1 – 6, while the cash part will increase a little bit less. For suites, the points part is always double the points for standard rooms, while the cash part is more than double.

That’s the way it is, things get more expensive, but that doesn’t mean that we like that. Starwood promises expanded availability and time will tell if it will be noticeable. What are your thoughts on that?
